The work done by independent artists never ceases to amaze me. It’s one thing to put in all the time to write, record, master, design, and replicate a CD or DVD, but it’s quite another to do it while trying to make a living. Working at a CD replication business, I’ve dealt with a lot of customers who work a day job and do all of their rehearsing, recording, and performing on nights and weekends. They are definitely some of the harder working people I know, and their creativity stretches beyond their work and into their everyday living and problem-solving.
For example, take a look at a project I found by a guy named Chris Merkley. On top of putting out what appears to be 5 different CD projects in the last 4 years, he’s also been busy converting an old school bus into a touring bus with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability. He’s finding materials in auto salvage yards to save money, and he’s also getting sponsors in exchange for endorsements and links in his blog.
Even you could have your own tour bus! Of course, it appears this gentleman has a little bit of experience in welding and metal cutting, but after reading through the blog, it seems he’s just learning how do other things by talking to experts and researching info on the internet. Paying to take a few welding classes at a local tech school would be a lot less expensive then paying a few hundred thousand dollars for a ready-made tour bus.
OK, so maybe I haven’t convinced anybody to go buy up old school buses and convert them into a first-class touring coach, but I hope you have fun reading about this project.
